Since We Survived One, Why Not Try Two?

We all know that we may have to face another cancer, whether it’s a metastasis of our primary, or a new one altogether. That knowledge doesn’t lessen the shock when it happens.

The journey to “survivorsmiles” began with the “Long and Winding Road”. We fought, we raged, we endured, and began to feel as though we were winning. Then a cough, or a lump, or a night sweat, leads to blood work, x-rays, and biopsies.

Suddenly, it’s “hello, Willie Nelson…we’re On The Road Again”.

In my case, I was in the 4th year of remission after my diagnosis and treatment for mantle cell lymphoma. I was strong, healthy, and happy. Then, in April 2001, I started to experience a discomfort and swelling in my neck.

Since the beginning of my journey, I have had the good fortune to have medical care from physicians and medical staff who communicate, fully disclose information to me, and who trust my judgment and knowledge of my body. I called the office on a Friday, and was seen the following Monday.

My oncologist, Dr. Bradley Slease, examined my throat and neck, and stated that while he could identify my area of concern, he didn’t think it was a return of my MCL. But in keeping with his pattern of communication and trust, he said, “Let’s make sure”, and ordered blood work, chest x-ray, CT Scan, and PET scan.

In a few days, I met with the Doctor to discuss the results. He came into the examination room, shaking his head as he entered. “Well”, he said, “there is no evidence of a relapse of the MCL…..your neck and throat are clear.” Then, after a long, pregnant pause, he continued. “However,” he said, “the x-ray, cat scan, and pet scan all lit up a spot on the upper lobe of you left lung. We will need a biopsy to confirm, but there is little doubt that it is malignant.”

Wow!! Talk about something coming out of left field……..

The routine began anew. More tests, biopsy, examinations, surgery……..recovery, regaining strength, resuming life, surviving……….smiling!!
