When we think of caregivers, we tend to think of the person who sits by the bed, comforting us. We think of the person who keeps track of the meds, and makes sure we stay on schedule. We think of the person who makes certain we don’t miss an appointment with the onc, or the lab. How often do we consider the person who makes certain our caregiver has the time and energy to care for us? Probably not as often as we should. My primary caregiver is my wife, who is a schoolteacher. My month-long hospitalization was at a facility more than 100 miles away. The only way my wife, my caregiver, was going to be able to be there was with the help of her teaching team. With never a question or complaint, they stepped up. They picked up slack, rearranged obligations, and helped carry her load. Because Judy, Sarah, and Donna cared, my caregiver could care for me.
